Spring is starting to uncurl, beginning to stretch and open her eyes. Yesterday morning we were greeted by thick fog that devoured the snow and draped the trees like a thick woolen shawl.
There's a magic and mystery to fog, a peace and solitude as deep as the ocean. Admittedly, driving 40+ miles in it on my way to a workshop I found it less romantic. Fear of crashing into the car in front of me--or being crashed into from behind--transformed sleepy, cozy magic into an anxiety-provoking trek. But after 20 miles or so, suddenly the sun emerged, the fog became mere wisps tangled in the upper tree branches and it was smooth sailing.
Anyway, this morning driving to work I realized how quickly Spring is waking; the signs were all around me. Yes, there are lakes that are forming , freezing, thawing and refreezing as the snow melts. But a couple of days ago, when I staggered downstairs and reached into the cabinet for my coffee mug, my hand bypassed the Winter moose mug and instead reached higher to close around this happy harbinger of sunshine and flowers.
